EDCI550 Advanced Integrated Literacy II: Responding to the Needs of Children (Intensive)

It is estimated that 15% of the population experience difficulty learning to read. In the field of literacy studies, there has been significant debate over dyslexia and whether it is simply a form of neurological diversity or a disorder. Either way, children who learn to read differently may need different strategies to support their growing literacy. Science in this area has exploded over the last 30 years since the development of fMRI technology and the ability to observe which neural pathways are being used by a reader in real time. This course will explore neurological diversity, strategies to support struggling readers, and a host of related issues including prevention strategies. There is much classroom teachers can do to support children in learning to read. Throughout this term, teachers will identify students most likely to need additional support and create strategies to provide it, while constructing blind case studies documenting outcomes to share with each other and their teaching colleagues.
