NURS451 Genetics and Genomics
Genetics and Genomics introduces the foundational principles of genetics and genomics and their application to professional nursing practice across the lifespan. Students explore genetic concepts including inheritance patterns, molecular genetics, genomic variation, genetic testing, and ethical, legal, and social implications of genomic care. Emphasis is placed on integrating genetic and genomic knowledge into patient assessment, risk identification, health promotion, disease prevention, and clinical decision-making. Through case studies and discussion activities, students strengthen genomics-related clinical reasoning skills. A comprehensive final project challenges students to synthesize course concepts by applying genetics and genomics to a clinical scenario. Students will analyze risk factors, interpret genetic information, consider ethical implications, and develop an evidence-based, patient-centered nursing plan of care that demonstrates critical thinking, clinical judgment, and integration of genomic principles into holistic nursing practice.
