Program Description
The Automotive Repair Technician Program is designed to introduce students to basic automotive repair. The Automotive Repair Technician Workforce Certification provides entry-level training that emphasizes competency-based, hands-on learning. The program is designed to meet the requirements of the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) curriculum and includes related content in mathematics, science, and communication.
The program is 13 weeks, 40 hours per week. Attendance at all class sessions is required.
Requirements for this program include:
- A completed Salish Kootenai College application
- A completed Automotive Repair Technician application
- Must be 18 years of age by start of training
- Must have a NEGATIVE drug screen taken and submitted no more than 30 days before the program start date. The cost of the drug screen is the responsibility of the applicant.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time.
- Must be able to visually read from a manual or handbook
- Must be able to lift 30 pounds to shoulder height and above.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of this certification, students who complete the program will be able to:
1. Demonstrate entry-level skills in automotive repair, including diagnosis and repair of engines, suspension/steering, drive trains, brakes, and heating/cooling systems.
2. Perform basic measurements and repairs using standard and metric precision tools according to industry standards.
3. Identify strategies including use of industry resources in diagnosis and repair of automobiles.
4. Communicate professionally with employers, customers, and co-workers using industry standard language.
5. Apply basic concepts of mathematics and science to diagnosis and repair of automobiles.
6. Demonstrate safe and professional behaviors in classroom and shop settings.
