LFSC425 Science Ethics and Responsible Conduct II

This course is a continuation of Science Ethics and Responsible Conduct I taken in the sophomore year of the Life Sciences program. Responsible conduct of research involves “the awareness and application of established professional norms and ethical principles in the performance of all activities related to scientific research.” (NIH) This advanced ethics course will prepare students for the responsible conduct of research in the laboratory environment in preparation for graduate level studies. The course will include eight key modules over the 10-week period: (1) ethical conduct in the lab, (2) collaborations (3) humans as research subjects (4) animals as research models (5) science reporting (e.g. publications, presentations) (6) record keeping (7) data management planning (8) mentoring. The course will be held in conjunction with the Science Ethics and Responsible Conduct I course in order to allow crossover in mentoring and cohort learning between senior level and sophomore level students. More advanced concepts in ethics and responsible conduct may be discussed/assigned separately from the sophomore level students.
