College Placement Assessment Information

All new students who intend to pursue a college certificate or degree and who have not completed an Associate Degree or higher are required to take a Placement Assessment to assess skills in written English, and mathematics. The College Placement Assessment process occurs during or prior to new student orientation and registration.  The College Placement Assessment must be completed before registering for classes.

The College Placement Assessment supports student success by helping students to register for the correct sequence of courses and build their college-level skills as needed. Academic advisors use the assessment to recommend courses, including any support or developmental classes that may be indicated by the assessment scores.

  • All new and transferring full-time and part-time students who have yet to accumulate 30 quarter credits are required to take a Placement Assessment test that assesses skills in English and mathematics before pre-registration.  Assessment tests are currently provided online at interested.skc.edu after completing the Placement Intake form..
  • All students who have accumulated over 30 quarter credits and have not taken English and/or mathematics are required to take a Placement Assessment test.
  • Students who have completed an Associate Degree or higher are not required to take a Placement Assessment. However, academic departments may request that students who completed their college degree more than five years ago take a math and/or English Placement Assessment to determine the need for tutoring or other assistance.

he College Placement Assessment is online and accessed at interested.skc.edu under Step 1.  There, you will see the math and English writing assessment.  Take each assessment on your own, and do your best.  It is not in your best interest to "cheat," as you may be misplaced in courses needed to successfully complete your degree program, which may result in extra time to complete your degree.  Once each assessment is complete, the student and advisor will receive the results to register for classes.  Allow time for College Assessment scoring.

  • English Assessment. Allow one week for the English writing assessment.

  • Math Assessment. The Math assessment has a maximum score of 20 points. Math course placement is determined by the student’s score and degree track.
