PSYC435 Counseling in Native American Communities

Counseling in Native American Communities provides an overview of “culturally alert” counseling, while addressing specific issues related to mental health in Indian Country. Topics include: multicultural competency, culturally sensitive interviewing and assessment, culturally appropriate treatment planning, use of Traditional and Western ways of treatment, working with community resources in liaison with health delivery systems, working within family systems, and navigating among Tribal worldviews, beliefs and intertribal mental health systems. The objective of the course is to enhance awareness of what it is like to work within various Mental Health systems in Indian Country. Using examples of the Enduring Legacies Case Studies, emphasis will be placed on intergenerational trauma and its relevance to Native American communities.
