EDUC270 Introduction to Secondary STEM Teaching

Introduction to Secondary STEM Teaching introduces aspiring educators to the fundamental principles of effective teaching in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), with a specific emphasis on Culturally Responsive Pedagogy and Indigenous Knowledge Systems. Designed for second-year majors, the curriculum shifts the focus from the what of content knowledge to the how of pedagogical content knowledge. Students will examine research-based instructional models alongside Land-Based Pedagogy and Place-Based Education. The course addresses the unique responsibility of the STEM teacher to decolonize the curriculum, validate Indigenous contributions to science and mathematics, and foster strong STEM identities for students. Through micro-teaching labs and case study analysis, students will begin to develop their professional identity, moving from passive observers to active designers of learning experiences. Embedded in the course is a 20 hour practicum experience in middle school or high school math and/or science classrooms.
