MAST242 Phlebotomy for the Medical Assistant

Phlebotomy for the Medical Assistant provides the student with the knowledge and skill to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and precautions. This includes vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture specimen collection in adults, pediatric and geriatric patients. Emphasis will be placed on infection prevention, correct patient identifiers, proper labeling and handling of specimens, quality assurance guidelines, processing and correct documentation. Students will be instructed in the use of an electronic health record system (EHR). Cultural considerations of the Native population will be emphasized.
