PSYC 460A Counseling in Native American Communities

Counseling in Native American Communities provides an overview of "culturally alert" counseling, while addressing issues specific to mental health in Indian Country. Topics include: Multicultural competence, culturally sensitive interviewing and assessment, culturally appropriate treatment planning based on non-biased conceptualizations (avoiding prejudice, discrimination, stereotyping), working within family systems, use of Traditional and Western ways of treatment, navigating amongst Tribal worldviews, beliefs and intertribal mental health systems, and working with community resources in liaison with various health delivery systems. The objective of the course is to enhance awareness of working in Mental Health systems in Indian Country. Using examples of Enduring Legacies Case Studies, an emphasis will be placed on intergenerational trauma and its relevance to Native American communities.
