Academic Minor Program Guide
Information for Students
Students enrolled at Salish Kootenai College in a bachelor degree program may elect one or more of the minors offered. Electing to earn a minor is optional and there is no limit on the number of minors a student may elect. Minors permit students to take a cohesive set of courses that complement studies in one’s major or to explore an unrelated area of intellectual interest.
The particular requirements for a minor are outlined by individual academic programs. Minors are not available in all academic departments and some minors do not have a corresponding major. Minors are approved by the SKC curriculum committee.
A minor must require no less than 30 quarter credits of course work, show structure and coherence with specific learning objectives, and contain at least 10 credits of upper-level courses. Students who declare and complete an approved minor will receive a notation on their student transcript but not on their diploma.
The following guidelines provide requirements for design and implementation of Minors:
- Students must be in good academic standing with an overall GPA of 2.0 to declare a Minor.
- An individually designed minor is not allowed.
- No course may be shared between the requirements of two minors.
- Students may combine a minor with any major, but each minor must include 30 credit hours of coursework with 2O of those credits being counted solely toward the minor.
- Courses that are part of a student's minor may meet the general education requirements for the student’s major or program requirements.
- A student must earn an overall GPA of at least 2.0 in the minor, including any departmental prerequisites necessary for the completion of the minor.
- Students must be currently enrolled during the academic year in which a minor is awarded.
- Students have the responsibility to know and satisfy all requirements for any declared minor.
- Minors, along with their requirements and other pertinent information, are described in detail under Academic Programs on the SKC website and in the SKC Catalog.
- Students will have an advisor in both their Academic Major and Academic Minor.
Procedures for Students:
- Before declaring an Academic Minor, a student should meet with an advisor in the minor program to review requirements.
- After electing a minor on the “Declaration of Major and Minor Form” the student presents the form to his or her current major or program advisor and a designated advisor from the minor program, both of whom sign the form. The student submits the form to the registrar to have the minor entered on his or her record.
- After completing the requirements for a minor, the student must complete a graduation application for both the Major and the Minor.
