LFSC471 Ethnopharmacology
Ethnopharmacology focuses on the relationship that people have with environmentally sourced biologically active substances and their therapeutic, or sometimes toxic, activities. A cross-cultural framework integrating anthropologic and pharmacognostic knowledge will be used to better understand the ethnographic approaches to obtain well-known bioactive substances. The pharmacologic and physiologic activities of these well-known bioactive substances will be examined at the molecular/mechanistic level using structure-based receptor pharmacology, pharmacogenomics, and pharmacokinetics. This course will employ foundational lectures, informative presentations, and investigation of current trends in the field through impactful articles.
