NLTE439 Teaching Reading & Writing in the DLL Classroom

Teaching Reading and Writing in DLL Classrooms focuses on developing first language literacy. Candidates will examine applicable theories and research as well as their social and cultural impact on a linguistically and culturally diverse society. Through a whole language/thematic approach to literacy, candidates will develop a practical and working understanding of teaching the reading and writing process in their students’ first language. An emphasis will be placed on integrating American Indian and/or tribally specific literature and resources. Various methods will be discussed as candidates learn to plan and organize a balanced literacy program.
