NURS450 Genetics and Genomics for Nurses
Nurses care for a variety of patients with known and long-standing genetic disorders. Nurses also care for individuals with no known or recently known genetic disorders across the lifespan. This nursing care takes place in acute care settings, long term care settings, community venues, and the client’s home. With the completion of the Human Genome Project, new knowledge is now available about the association of genetics (single genes and associated inheritance) and genomics (all the individual’s genes and interactions with the environment). The genetic and genomic analysis is related to the implications for the individual’s health. Nursing care is planned, implemented, and evaluated based on these implications. This course will address various genetic disorders and the attendant requisite nursing care, the Human Genome Project, and implications for future treatment plans based on genetic testing.
