How to select texts free of bias and stereotype, authentically representing traditional and contemporary Indigenous cultures will be a focus and candidates will learn ‘how to tell the difference’ through positive and negative examples. Strategies will be demonstrated for teaching with literature ranging from picture books to chapter books to a young adult novel. Genres will be explored, examining fiction and non-fiction, and the special status of traditional stories in a cultural context.
